Members of the Neosho high school band participated in district solos and ensembles on Saturday, March 6 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO. The students did a fantastic job especially considering the festival was held more than a month earlier than normal. We have seen growth in the number of students participating in the event and a steady increase in the number of "1" ratings (which sends the students to the University of Missouri—Columbia for state festival in May.) Last year we took 9 instrumental events to state, and this year that number has climbed to 13. Congratulations to all the students who participated. The following students earned a 1 rating and the right to perform their event at the state level. Shawna B. Junior, Flute Solo Carlie G. The instrumental music program at Neosho School District include the following organizations: high school symphonic band, concert band, marching band, jazz band, color guard, winter guard, and various small ensembles; eighth grade concert band, marching band, and jazz band; seventh grade concert band; and sixth grade concert band. Students in all grades are encouraged to participate in solos, small ensembles, and audition for honor bands. Each year we have more participation and success. We want to thank all our administration for their support. We are able to expand the program and have success because of the teamwork and respect we share between the directors and administration. We are able to do so much with the students because of our team teaching situations throughout the program. Elizabeth Rogers and Ryan Lovell teach the high school and junior high bands. All the band directors, Elizabeth Rogers, Ryan Lovell, Jonna Ditto, and Darren Cordray, are able to work with the seventh grade which meets in two separate classes. The sixth grade band is divided into seven different classes: flutes (taught by Elizabeth Rogers), clarinets (taught by Ryan Lovell), saxophones (taught by Ryan Lovell), French horns (taught by Jonna Ditto), trumpets (taught by Jonna Ditto), low brass (taught by Darren Cordray), and percussion (taught by Darren Cordray). This is a wonderful set up because the teachers are able to give more individualized instruction to the students and they are able to learn and improve at a faster pace. We are excited about our future and will continue to work together toward obtaining rewarding musical experiences for our students, parents, and the community. Thank you for your support!
